In India, terrestrial television was introduced in September 15, 1959 with the experimental telecast in Delhi which made use of a small transmitter and a makeshift studio. During that time, the government had been reluctant to invest in television because it felt that a poor country like India could not afford the medium. It was until TV had proven its role in the development process that television gained a foothold in the country.

At that time, there was only one national channel Doordarshan, which was government owned. The Ramayana and Mahabharata (both being Hindu mythological stories based on religious scriptures of the same names) were the first major television series produced. These two TV serials reached the zenith of the world record viewership numbers for a single program. More and more people began to buy television sets. Programs were broadcasted twice a week for an hour a day on topics such as community health, citizens’ duties and rights, and traffic and road sense. In 1961, the broadcasts were expanded to include a school educational television project. The regular daily transmission started in 1965 as a part of All India Radio.

In 1972, a second television station was opened in Bombay, and the first major expansion of television in India began. In 1982, television began to attain national coverage and develop as the government's pre-eminent media organization. 1991 saw the beginnings of international satellite broadcasting in India and the government launched a major economic liberalization program. More recently, the Indian television industry has seen a dramatic growth within the past two decades. Today, television in India has become a huge industry. In fact, the Indian television system is considered as one of the most extensive systems in the world.

Bollywood is the nickname given to the Indian film industry. The term is a play on words, blending Bombay and Hollywood together. Approximately half of all Indian households own a television. In the year 2010, a total number of 515 channels are available in the country out of which 150 are pay channels.

Now that you know its history, you can watch Hindi TV serials online or even enjoy Bollywood at its best.
